The History of Pilates

Joseph Pilates, born a sickly child in 1883 Germany, overcame his childhood illnesses with vigorous exercise, a keen mind, and an (enthusiastic) spirit.  He became an accomplished athlete, gymnast, and boxer and when he moved to England before WWI he even trained Scotland Yard Detectives in self-defense. His signature Pilates “Reformer” was the result of years of helping sick and injured patients recover by exercising with resistance springs that he attached to their hospital beds.

Pilates further developed his fitness and strengthening technique when he moved to New York City during the “roaring 20’s” and opened his first studio, in the same building as the New York City Ballet. They then hired him to train and rehabilitate their ballerinas.

From his early years training and healing of ballet dancers in New York, “Pilates” became the premiere exercise, toning, and strengthening program of professional athletes (football, tennis, golf, hockey, etc.) dancers, models, as well as Hollywood movie stars.

From decades of being the training method of the elite, “Pilates” is now available through professional instructors like Maggie who provides “Pilates” in a unique, affordable, private setting.
